Old East Dallas led the city in restoration activity and neighborhood involvement in the 1970s. Rehabilitation began here because this area contained both the grandest homes and definable neighborhoods in the greatest need of repair. A tremendous asset to redevelopment was the fact that these distinct neighborhoods were fully developed in almost geographical order from the 1880s to the 1930s between the Central Business District and Mockingbird Lane.

These older and historic neighborhoods show how national architectural trends were translated in Dallas, including parallel development in the schools of Prairie, Craftsman, Mission, Colonial Revival and other Eclectic styles. Old East Dallas' trademark remains front porches, tall pecan trees, flowering crepe myrtles and mature magnolias. It has a small town atmosphere where people know and enjoy their neighbors. In this setting of well-organized neighborhoods and quiet streets, it's easy to forget that Downtown Dallas is only a few blocks away.
