State Thomas Neighborhood
State-Thomas represents one of our oldest residential neighborhoods and is our most recent historic district. Future plans call for this unique assortment of elegant Victorian homes and shotgun shanties to be the centerpiece of a sophisticated, multi-use intown development. In the 1970s, architects, interior designers and art and antique dealers rediscovered the southern portion. In the latter part of that decade, individuals began moving into the upstairs of these unique houses, while using the downstairs portions for offices. The district contains strong examples of Queen Anne and Victorian architecture: extravagant brackets and corbels, turned columns and bullseye molding abound. Other styles represented include Folk Victorian; Neoclassical with its two- story pediments and columns; and, of course, several examples of Prairie style counterbalancing the nearby Victorians.
