When artisanship was a given, not a rarity, your great grandparents dreamed of square footage. I know you dream of exceptional design: a home that is refined, architecturally pleasing, and is significant in its quality, style, and pedigree; a reflection of you; a home that makes a statement and contributes to the aesthetic landscape of Dallas.

This architect designed home exudes the elegance of Highland Park and the majesty of Preston Hollow. The very refined living room is positioned to accept the early morning and late afternoon sun through floor to ceiling windows, the large informal living room with wide plank hardwood floors and a vaulted ceiling supported by massive wood beams looks out across the pool and series of rear gardens through a series of French doors. The large formal dining room has views of the front gardens and the lake through floor to ceiling windows. The kitchen and breakfast room are open and inviting as they enjoy sunlit views. The master bedroom is commodious, the his and her closets are extravagant and the lady’s bathroom exquisite.

Original detail is preserved and a Four Seasons style luxury is added. The floor plan is incredibly open, allowing full views of four rooms and the pool terrace.
The period glass, mosaic tile, carved stone and wrought iron rails resonate with the expectations of an architecturally significant Highland Park home. The sleek finishes, repeating arched openings and glass double doors allow natural light to fill every room. The expansive kitchens' gorgeous granite, stainless steel appliances and hardwood floors echo the clean elegance of the rest of the home.
The master bedroom has its own private vestibule, an expansive bedroom with a sitting area and fireplace, large master bathroom and walk-in closet and on the other end of the bedroom is an additional 15 foot by 13 foot walk-in closet and 11 foot by 9 foot dressing room. All three bedrooms and bathrooms are on the second floor. A large fourth bedroom, living area and bathroom are above the two car garage.
This stylish Highland Park home sits on .24 acres, allowing it to be set back from the street and still have room for the ample terrace and large pool surrounded by a rear garden designed by Robert Bellamy.
At a time when architectural character and aesthetic triumph are quickly evaporating, here is a home that reminds us of real quality. You will enjoy this chic Highland Park residence. For more information on this Highland Park residence or other significant homes, please contact Douglas Newby.
Dallas Midcentury Modern $895,000
Dallas 50's Modern Style Home for Sale
Preston Hollow Home in Pristine Condition
 |
The original owners of the last standing, architect designed, pristine condition, midcentury modern home in Preston Hollow have asked me to offer this architecturally significant home for sale.
In 1957 the stylish and sophisticated owners assembled an incredibly talented team to design a midcentury modern home.
|
Click on thumbnails to view more and larger images.
Architect William Benson was joined by the Dallas’ top modern interior designer Louise Kahn and celebrated landscape architect Richard Myrick. The result is a home that defines a modern era that continues to inspire and engage. The spaces are both commodious and efficient. The selection of materials further defines spaces, creates a simultaneously serene and exhilarating environment, and provides warmth and vibrancy.
The cork floors are timeless and elegant and very 1950s. A judicious use of interior brick walls along with the white walls accentuates the floating walls of African Korina wood cabinets, book shelves and vertical panels. The 20 mm glazed Italian glass tile was individually set, creating a dynamic finish for the fireplace hearth and hood. These tiles appear as the authentic inspiration for the fashionable ceramic tile being introduced today in all the best design centers.
The heavy gauged glazed metal framed sliding glass doors with an internal locking system allow one to look out onto a garden, courtyard or terrace from every room.
Over ten years ago the Dallas Chapter AIA explored the city to find the best examples of modern homes built in the 1950s. This home was one of the seven homes chosen for Dallas’ first tour of midcentury modern homes titled 50s Cool so as not to confuse people with generic 1950s houses, as this was before the growing popularity and understanding of midcentury modern homes.
The owners have meticulously maintained this modern home which is evident from its exquisite condition. Even the fabric on the original modern furniture shows no signs of wear.
This modern residence has 2,720 square feet, four carports, two bedrooms, a library, formal and informal rooms, high ceilings and a great feeling of space. Since the home is on .47 acres there is plenty of room to add additional bedrooms on both ends of the home as originally contemplated as a possibility by William Benson, AIA. This contemporary home enjoys a canopy of tall mature trees and perfectly placed ornamental trees that punctuate the landscape design of Richard Myrick.
If you like modern architecture, you will love this midcentury modern home that reflects the best of the 20th century and remains current today.

Texas Modern Home on 2.63 Acres
Texas Modern Architecture
Every few years a great Texas modern home becomes available. Here is a home designed by the greatest Texas modern architect of his era. Architect Scott Lyons, who followed O’Neil Ford and preceded Frank Welch, designed the great modern homes in Highland Park and Preston Hollow that reflect the indigenous qualities of Texas.
Click on thumbnails to view more and larger images of Preston Hollow Estate Home.
Spectacular Land, Creeks, Trees, Lake
This 2.63 acre site has 460 feet of creek frontage with private park land on the other side of the creek. The incredible width of this estate property allows ample room for a tennis court adjacent to the 3,800 square foot Nick Glazbrook designed guest house. A large swimming pool, terraces, gardens and groves of mature trees, rugged ravine, broad grass meanderings along a creek and a small lake enhance the enjoyment of the property. The incredible setting accentuates the home designed to enjoy the landscape and Texas environment.

10,000 Square Foot Home, 3,800 Square Foot Guest House
Scott Lyons, known for designing some of the very best Highland Park, Preston Hollow, and country homes was the perfect architect for this Preston Hollow estate property. Wallace Womack was an ideal choice to build this important 10,000 square foot home to the commercial building standards. The graceful proportions, tall ceilings, massive amounts of glass, continuous interior and exterior walls of soft brick, cross-cut oak woodwork and vertical wood panels contribute to the home’s architectural elegance and relevance.
Click on thumbnail to view more and larger images of Preston Hollow Estate Guest House.
Nick Glazbrook Designed Guest House
Architect Nick Glazbrook designed the 3,800 square foot two-story guest house in a complementary Texas modern style. In this secondary residence you will find rooms or views enviable for primary residences. With bedrooms, four full baths, multiple living areas, office, kitchen and garage, use this space for guests, staff, entertaining or offices.
Value
The majority of the appraised value of the property is in the incredible acreage. The reproduction cost of the home far exceeds the remaining value assigned to the asking price. While this Preston Hollow home and estate property appraised for just $10,000,000, you will not find a property of this quality at near the price in Highland Park or Preston Hollow.

Award Winning Architecture
 |
In the 1960s, before there was the Arts District, before there was the Salon at the Nasher, or Arts and Letters Live at the Dallas Museum of Art, artists, architects, museum directors and art patrons gathered at 7010 Airline. This space was designed by Glen Allen Galaway, a friend and protégé of Philip Johnson, for his art, his friends and as his own home.
|
Click on thumbnails to view more and larger images.
This residence is a piece of art in itself - a 2,000 square foot sculpture set in a private garden, hidden in University Park.
In 1996 this architect designed home was named one of Dallas' 50 Significant Homes by the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects for their 50th anniversary. In 2007, this Dallas modern home was awarded the 25 Year Award, an award given to only one residence a year that continues to teach us about good design, great architecture, and remains meritorious.
Most important, this midcentury modern Dallas home is available to purchase. The space is perfect. Sleek and elegant, the home has a tall public space with walls of glazed openings and glass doors looking over the rear garden. The floor plan is simple, efficient and gracious. Now is the time to accentuate the design with 21st century materials and mechanics.
For the same price as a modern highrise unit you can have this smart, sexy modern space set in a garden and surrounded by mature trees. Whether you live in Dallas only a few days a month or the majority of the year, this small space lives big.

Preston Hollow Real Estate $3,400,000
Dallas Estate Property
 |
Here is a one-acre site that defines a perfect Preston Hollow setting. On the highest elevation of a secluded street, looking across a circle park that separates the surrounding multi-acre estate homes, this property has endless views of a green landscape and tall mature trees that recede in the distance with barely a glimpse of any other homes.
|
Audubon is a lovely street of just a few important estate homes hidden in the neighborhood of the Rockbrook estate homes and Park Lane estate homes.
The existing 4,000 square foot Preston Hollow home currently captures the original aesthetic of Preston Hollow and you might consider renovating this residence. However, there is not another property in Preston Hollow with this estate property’s exemplary aesthetics so conducive for an architect to design an important home.

Max Levy Architect Designed
 |
Max Levy, who trained with Bud Oglesby, designed this 3,963 square foot Texas Modern home on .54 acres to capture the changing natural light and the shadows that it casts throughout the day while simultaneously providing protection from direct sunlight, and to provide ample and open living spaces created.
|
Click on thumbnails to view additional and larger images.
The outdoors is successfully brought indoors with a courtyard that centers the home and offers private views of the greenbelt that frames the rear of the property. The patterns of dappled light on the interior of the home come from the redwood slats of the clerestory windows. Working with the natural elements and using sunlight to the advantage of the home is the genius of Max Levy.
Interior designer Nancy Leib understood the importance of the sunlit patterns on the interior of the home as she chose natural tones to complement them. Helping to integrate the home to the site were landscape architects Mesa Design Group. This home combines a stunning design, floor plan and textures that bring the outdoors inside and simultaneously maintains sophisticated spaces for an art collector or for one who just appreciates good design.

Here is a proper estate property. A splendid approach curves along a creek up to a magnificent home articulated in stone and brick, surrounded by wide manicured lawns and a wooded perimeter.

Other 14,000 square foot homes in Dallas have been built, but where do you find one that is private and gracious, removed from a road, and not in sight of other homes. In what other city within eight miles of an internationally recognized Arts District can you find such architectural and bucolic excellence.
Larry Boerder, defining great architecture in Dallas, pulled from the eclectic European vocabulary of the Edwardian estate homes to design this architectural master work. Grand rooms with tall arched windows overlook the gardens. A sumptuous mahogany library with mixed wood floors including burled walnut is breathtaking, elegant and inviting.

Edward Durell Stone was one of a handful of international architects who had the ability to design prominent skyscrapers, the symbol of the 20th century, modern museums looking at art and collections in a new way, and homes combining technology with humanity.
The open floor plan eliminates hallways in this 10,000 square foot home. The tall ceilings, walls of windows and glass doors celebrate light and the outside. Denby marble from Vermont, cut and polished in Italy connote elegance, the hand-carved arabesque wooden screens celebrate craftsmanship. The concrete pier and beam foundation reinforced with steel beams establish the quality of construction and renovation.
Courtyards create and protect outdoor space and provide the same sense of serenity on one acre as country estates on much more land. The peristyle extends views over vast amounts of landscaped land. This is the ultimate 1950s Mid-Century Modern home; a celebration of the clean edge of the machine and the soft hand of the artist.
