Architect Lionel Morrison won the highest TSA Award for this three-story, 3,517 square foot, three bedroom, three bath home located just down the street from Travis Walk and the joys of the neighborhood restaurants and retail adjacent to the Katy Trail. Concrete floors, bronze wall panels, stainless steel kitchen and carved stone basins provide sleek contrast to the warmth of the cross-cut white oak wood scrolled panels placed dramatically across from each other in the living room and dining room.
This award-winning townhouse is one of only four homes comprising what continues to be the most successful town house development reflecting modern style, aesthetic achievement and proximity to the Katy Trail and the retail and restaurants surrounding Knox Street.

Northern Heights, an oasis of creeks, trees, trails, architecture and style, is the perfect neighborhood for an architect designed modern home. Located just down the trail from the vibrancy of Knox and Mockingbird Station in one direction and the West Village in the other, Northern Heights is also a short walk to the tranquility of Turtle Creek.
Metal, stone and an antique front door balance the exterior composition visually and tactilely. Balconies, elevated terraces and decks emphasize the glorious site.
The low winter sun streams across the dark stained wide plank wood floors. The solar tinted windows and built-in window shades protect the house from the harsh summer sun. The expansive and open spaces are perfect for entertaining. Long walls of glass and doors opening to the terraces, decks, and pool, all of which are surrounded by a tall border of green, beckon a party. The surround sound inside and outside will certainly accommodate the festivities.
The style is sophisticated and modern, and also very livable for a family. A moveable fence around the pool has been installed for the safety of children. There is abundant built-in storage in the two-car garage. There is room for dog runs, a garden with a daybed, and a play area for children. Even the keypad locked gate to the Katy Trail is at the end of the driveway, allowing the easiest access to the Trail for the family to bike, run or stroll.
It has been said location is important, and this is the truest for a modern home because the site is such a crucial element and strong component of the design. It is also helpful for a modern home to be built in a neighborhood such as Northern Heights and Northern Hills where the massing and style of the surrounding homes are a complement to the elegant modern design of a home like this. What creates the most value is when you have a location and home that is not replicable. When you walk through the small, protected Northern Heights neighborhood, all the homes enjoy the benefits of the neighborhood, but there are only a few single-family homes that enjoy being next to the Katy Trail. When you are ready to explore this neighborhood and review the architecturally significant homes in Dallas, please give me, Douglas Newby, a call.

A person walks up to the front door of the 4,100 sf home and proceeds past the entry hall to the living room with three walls of glass. Because of the dramatic grade of the lot you are now essentially looking over the back yard and garden from a two-story elevation. The expansive, elevated terrace becomes a daily living space as it is accessible from the formal and informal living areas and kitchen.

Modern Renovation Accentuates Design
In 1939 O’Neil Ford and Arch Swank designed this home, committed to making Texas homes as true to the principals of modern architecture as the modernists in Europe. This Texas modern home was a great triumph that was maintained but untouched for over 60 years. The recent renovation accentuates the open spaces and clean lines, warmth and natural elegance of the home.

Master Bedroom Suite in Treetops
All three bedrooms, including the master bedroom suite, are in the tree tops with views of three acres of forest. The breakfast room and original library open to the elevated screen porch, a recognized element of the early David Williams and O’Neil Ford homes.

Dallas Midcentury Modern $595,000
Dallas 50's Modern Style Home for Sale

The original owners of the last standing, architect designed, pristine condition, midcentury modern home in Preston Hollow have asked me to offer this architecturally significant home for sale.
In 1957 the stylish and sophisticated owners assembled an incredibly talented team to design a midcentury modern home.

Preston Hollow Home in Pristine Condition
Architect William Benson was joined by the Dallas’ top modern interior designer Louise Kahn and celebrated landscape architect Richard Myrick. The result is a home that defines a modern era that continues to inspire and engage. The spaces are both commodious and efficient. The selection of materials further defines spaces, creates a simultaneously serene and exhilarating environment, and provides warmth and vibrancy.
The cork floors are timeless and elegant and very 1950s. A judicious use of interior brick walls along with the white walls accentuates the floating walls of African Korina wood cabinets, book shelves and vertical panels. The 20 mm glazed Italian glass tile was individually set, creating a dynamic finish for the fireplace hearth and hood. These tiles appear as the authentic inspiration for the fashionable ceramic tile being introduced today in all the best design centers.
The heavy gauged glazed metal framed sliding glass doors with an internal locking system allow one to look out onto a garden, courtyard or terrace from every room.
Over ten years ago the Dallas Chapter AIA explored the city to find the best examples of modern homes built in the 1950s. This home was one of the seven homes chosen for Dallas’ first tour of midcentury modern homes titled 50s Cool so as not to confuse people with generic 1950s houses, as this was before the growing popularity and understanding of midcentury modern homes.
The owners have meticulously maintained this modern home which is evident from its exquisite condition. Even the fabric on the original modern furniture shows no signs of wear.
This modern residence has 2,720 square feet, four carports, two bedrooms, a library, formal and informal rooms, high ceilings and a great feeling of space. Since the home is on .47 acres there is plenty of room to add additional bedrooms on both ends of the home as originally contemplated as a possibility by William Benson, AIA. This contemporary home enjoys a canopy of tall mature trees and perfectly placed ornamental trees that punctuate the landscape design of Richard Myrick.
If you like modern architecture, you will love this midcentury modern home that reflects the best of the 20th century and remains current today.

Max Levy Architect Designed

Max Levy, who trained with Bud Oglesby, designed this 3,963 square foot Texas Modern home on .54 acres to capture the changing natural light and the shadows that it casts throughout the day while simultaneously providing protection from direct sunlight, and to provide ample and open living spaces created.

The outdoors is successfully brought indoors with a courtyard that centers the home and offers private views of the greenbelt that frames the rear of the property. The patterns of dappled light on the interior of the home come from the redwood slats of the clerestory windows. Working with the natural elements and using sunlight to the advantage of the home is the genius of Max Levy.
Interior designer Nancy Leib understood the importance of the sunlit patterns on the interior of the home as she chose natural tones to complement them. Helping to integrate the home to the site were landscape architects Mesa Design Group. This home combines a stunning design, floor plan and textures that bring the outdoors inside and simultaneously maintains sophisticated spaces for an art collector or for one who just appreciates good design.

University Park Modern $775,000
Architect Sharon Odum
 |
Close to SMU in University Park, this modern residence designed by architect Sharon Odum fulfills many aspirational criteria. In an environment with increasing demand for modern homes, it is hard to find architect designed modern homes in any neighborhood. It is particularly difficult to find a modern home in University Park, much less in the SMU neighborhood.

Sharon Odum, AIA, designed this attached single-family modern residence to allow voluminous amounts of sunlight to fill the space. A classic E-shaped design creates light shafts with three walls of windows, naturally illuminating each room. This design also illuminates windows on the exterior walls closest to the neighbors, providing privacy. This home with 3,113 square feet with three bedrooms and three and one half bathrooms is sophisticated, modern, open. You will enjoy the honesty of structural materials, and the transcendence of sleek and refined finishes. Beautiful by day, gorgeous by night.
Architect Joseph Gordon Designs Midcentury
Home in Lakewood
White Rock Lake Down the Hill
Future Offering
 |
Joseph Gordon was a modernist architect who drew the attention of one of the “Dallas Nine,” artist Otis Dozier and his wife Velma, when they saw Joe Gordon’s modern work at 7135 Wildgrove. In 1955 they commissioned Joseph Gordon to design a home just a couple of blocks from White Rock Lake on a .38 acre site.

Modern Homes Deserve This Beautiful Site
Set off the street, a grove of rare Asian Colossal Bamboo introduces the environment of this home. Through the windows and transoms across the back of the house, one looks over the forested private acres beyond this property. Private gardens, 3,200 gallon koi pond and terraces are visually integrated into the modern home.
Elegant Midcentury Design
At a glance, you know this midcentury modern residence is special. The modern lines, abundance of glass, open car ports and a self-confident prominence announcing its significance.
Renovation Preserves and Massages Most Important Midcentury Modern Home in Lakewood
This 3,020 square foot midcentury home with a 450 square foot basement was designed with space for both the residence and the studio of Otis Dozier who along with the other of the Dallas Nine influenced how the Southwest was depicted and appreciated. As a result, this midcentury modern home is slightly larger in scale, and as it is open along a horizontal axis to the outside, it implies even more square footage of living space. Great decisions were made on elements that were obsessively preserved and elements where modern design continued into the 21st century.
Architect Ryan Williams of W2 Studio
This midcentury home benefitted by the period prowess of architect and builder Ryan Williams of W2 Studio who has designed and worked on many modern homes. The decisions made on this modern home are applauded.
Location in Lakewood
There are many impressions of Lakewood: mansions on White Rock Lake, homes designed by Hutsell on Lakewood Boulevard; however, many are unaware of hidden tree-lined streets with little traffic surrounded by acres of forest, just down the hill to the lake. Delrose is just such a street, the type of street and the type of neighborhood for which midcentury modern homes were intended.

Other 14,000 square foot homes in Dallas have been built, but where do you find one that is private and gracious, removed from a road, and not in sight of other homes. In what other city within eight miles of an internationally recognized Arts District can you find such architectural and bucolic excellence.
Larry Boerder, defining great architecture in Dallas, pulled from the eclectic European vocabulary of the Edwardian estate homes to design this architectural master work. Grand rooms with tall arched windows overlook the gardens. A sumptuous mahogany library with mixed wood floors including burled walnut is breathtaking, elegant and inviting.

Edward Durell Stone was one of a handful of international architects who had the ability to design prominent skyscrapers, the symbol of the 20th century, modern museums looking at art and collections in a new way, and homes combining technology with humanity.
The open floor plan eliminates hallways in this 10,000 square foot home. The tall ceilings, walls of windows and glass doors celebrate light and the outside. Denby marble from Vermont, cut and polished in Italy connote elegance, the hand-carved arabesque wooden screens celebrate craftsmanship. The concrete pier and beam foundation reinforced with steel beams establish the quality of construction and renovation.
Courtyards create and protect outdoor space and provide the same sense of serenity on one acre as country estates on much more land. The peristyle extends views over vast amounts of landscaped land. This is the ultimate 1950s Mid-Century Modern home; a celebration of the clean edge of the machine and the soft hand of the artist. Built in 1938, this architecturally significant home has an asymmetrical facade with a gabled roof, side wings, six and eight panel double hung sashes and a bay window reflecting both the style and this period of Colonial Revival architecture.

As you pass through the front facade of translucent glass that provides privacy from the street, you discover a splendid and open floor plan with expansive walls with a grid of horizontal windows separating the interior from the woods and rugged terrain of Royal Branch Creek and the park. The ambiguity of the interior and exterior space is further enhanced by the generous use of exterior materials within the home - exposed concrete floors, clear maple cabinetry and a subtle blend of texture, color and shadows.
